Some basic history-1

Irulas tribe was a hidden tribe for a long time. They were living around the the Nilgiri Hills, particularly in the upper crest of the Bhavani Dam, in the eastern slopes. They seemed to have been there for so many years. The oral tradiotions, stories and news that is handed down from generation to generation tell us about this fact.

According to some history, the Irula tribe is one of the dominant tribes of yester years when they were ruling the Kongu regions that include todays Coimbatore, Erode, Tirupur and Nilgiri Districts. The name Coimbatore comes from a word called Kovan Pudhur which refers to the place of Kovan who is the Irula tribal king.

Those days, places like Coimbatore, Tirupur, and Erode were forests. People were not inhabiting them just as they do now. They were primarily the routes for warriors, businessmen from other far away nations like Greece and Rome and a route primarily for the Kings. The places were only inhabited by the tribes.

Those days, the Irula tribe was the main tribe. The Kurumba tribe was specialised in medicine making and preparations of food and thus serving the major Irula community which was also big in number. The Kotha tribe was involved in making pottery. They were skilled in making variety of pots and the the major tribe, Irulas were buying them from them.

Things were all right till big kingdoms like the Cholas started invading various parts of these regions.
